Female libido
Sexual desire depends on several factors and not just hormones, as emotional state, stress, unhealthy lifestyle habits or illness can influence it.
For example, it happens that women, once past menopause and with a worse hormonal state than at 30, increase their libido; this is only because, by freeing themselves from certain burdens, their emotional state improves and they have more desire to have sexual encounters.
Your libido can be higher or lower, it's totally personal, but the absence of it shows that there is a problem.
Contraceptives containing estrogens (the combined pill, the contraceptive patch, and the vaginal ring) reduce libido because they increase a protein that makes a woman's endogenous testosterone less bioavailable.
Adequate testosterone levels are important in women, as they not only increase libido and improve pleasure, but also improve mood and body composition.
Excess body fat and physical inactivity can also affect our hormones, as we can develop insulin resistance. High insulin levels can lead to PCOS, which would compromise hormonal health and libido, in this case due to a high production of androgens.
High levels of cortisol and prolactin resulting from periods of stress also negatively affect our hormonal balance, impacting our libido.
How to increase libido naturally?
· Maintain an adequate level of body fat.
· Perform physical activities that use all muscle groups without reaching exhaustion and preferably with weights.
· Do not train every day, as rest is part of the training itself.
· Sleep hygiene: Sleeping 7 to 8 hours a day and having restful sleep, that is, not waking up tired
· Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages daily ( i.e. , one beer a day is bad)
· Avoid ultra-processed foods and those high in sugar. Eat fresh foods that don't need labels or have very few ingredients.
We can see that healthy lifestyle habits positively influence our sexual health at any age. If you feel you have lost your libido, don't accept it and seek help from a professional, as it can likely be reversed at any stage of life. Don't deny yourself something so good.
